Founded by artist Ellery Kurtz and environmental psychologist Howard Wishnow, the company focuses on enhancing life in space. Vertical Horizons specializes in researching and developing art materials suitable for use in the space environment. Their work includes testing the degradation of organic art materials, such as oil-based paints, linen canvas, primers, and bonding materials, during space flight. The company conducted an experiment through NASA's Get Away Special (GAS) program, where materials were sent aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia in a canister designed to test their resilience in space. This project, which included four original oil paintings by Kurtz, marked a significant milestone by being the first instance of original oil paintings created by a human orbiting the Earth.
