STAR Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center

The STAR Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center is a clinical, educational, research, and community service program located in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1990, the program is part of SUNY Downstate Medical Center's Department of Medicine and employs 13 people. The STAR Program offers a range of services for HIV+ adults, including confidential rapid HIV testing, primary care, gynecological services, patient education, and medical and family-centered case management. Additionally, the program provides care coordination, hormone therapy, nutritional counseling, medication adherence counseling, psychiatric consultation, mental health, and substance use treatment. The STAR Health Center (SHC) also has a specialized clinic for individuals with HIV who are co-infected with hepatitis C. The STAR Health Center is designated as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a prestigious distinction that recognizes the program's commitment to quality care. The SHC also offers specialized services targeting LGBTQ populations, including hormone therapy and high-resolution anoscopy. A dedicated LGBTQ clinic session is held on Monday evenings.
