Piffaro The Renaissance Band

Piffaro, The Renaissance Band is a musical ensemble based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1980, the company employs 5 to 9 individuals. Piffaro specializes in recreating the music of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods, performing both official, professional wind band music and the folk music of peasants. Their extensive collection of period instruments includes shawms, sackbuts, recorders, krumhorns, bagpipes, lutes, guitars, harps, and percussion. Piffaro performs regularly throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, and South America, appearing at major festivals and presenting an annual subscription series in Philadelphia and Delaware. Beyond performance, the ensemble is dedicated to education, hosting the National Recorder Competition for Young Players every two years. Piffaro's music is widely available through 18 recordings released since 1992, including releases on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon/Archiv Produktion and PARMA/Navona labels. Their performances and recordings are frequently featured on radio programs such as PRI's Performance Today, BBC's Early Music Show, and WWFM.
