The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is a public service organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. With a workforce of 60 employees, AFRD is responsible for providing emergency services across a diverse area encompassing 143.67 square miles, including the 14 square miles of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA). AFRD operates six distinct divisions: Support Services, Field Operations, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Technical Services, Fiscal and Administrative Affairs, and the Airport Fire Division. As one of a select few fire departments in the US, AFRD is accredited by the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) and holds an Insurance Service Office (ISO) Rating of Class 1. The department responds to a wide range of emergencies, serving approximately 523,738 residents, over 3,000 high-rise buildings, 23 miles of the rapid rail system, and 60 miles of interstate highway. At HJAIA, the world's busiest airport, AFRD operates five fire stations, ensuring the safety of over 1 million passengers from over 100 countries. In 2020 alone, AFRD responded to 82,833 calls for service, demonstrating its commitment to providing timely and effective emergency response across the Atlanta metropolitan area. Guided by the Standards of Response Coverage (SORC) , AFRD personnel strive to meet the highest service levels for residents, businesses, and visitors.
